Red packets or angpau for Chinese New Year and are used to present gifts of money to the young and single by older married couples. The characters say "Jia yen ren yen" meaning "happy family". Red is a very important positive lucky colour to Chinese and is used liberally for decorations during auspicious events like Chinese New Year.

"Yee Sang" a popular Chinese New Year dish originating from Malaysia. Typically a combination of preserved and pickled shredded fruit and vegetables, crunchy fried crackers, oil, sweet sauce and the main ingredient which is usually raw fish like Japanese "sashimi", in this case salmon. Before consuming it, a ritual, "Loh Sang" where everyone present participates in mixing and tossing the ingredients with chopsticks
